Autumn might just be one of the most magical times of year to get married in the UK. The countryside is glowing with colour, the light is warm and golden, and there’s something wonderfully cosy and romantic about the season. If you’re planning a wedding between September and November, here are a few ideas to inspire your autumnal celebration—without breaking the bank.
1. Make the most of the natural backdrop
In the UK, autumn brings a rich palette of deep reds, rusts, golds and mossy greens – perfect for creating a stunning backdrop without spending much on decoration. At Donington Park Farmhouse, our Rustic Barn Venue is surrounded by woodlands and open countryside that come alive with colour in the autumn months, making it ideal for outdoor photos (even if your ceremony is indoors).
Tip: Embrace the season with simple décor using leaves, conkers or small pumpkins and gourds. These can be foraged or picked up cheaply at farm shops or markets.
2. Think seasonal with flowers
Blooms like dahlias, chrysanthemums, and rose hips are in-season and budget-friendly during autumn. Add foliage like eucalyptus or ivy for texture and opt for dried grasses or seed heads to extend your arrangements and reduce cost.
Creative idea: Reuse your ceremony flowers as table centrepieces later in the day- or ask your florist for designs that can move easily between settings.
3. Lean into comfort food (and drink)
When the weather starts to cool, guests really appreciate hearty food and warming drinks. Our in-house chefs specialise in farm-to-fork catering using ingredients from the estate and trusted local suppliers.
Menu ideas: Think roast dinners with all the trimmings, warming seasonal soups, and a classic apple crumble with custard to finish. For drinks, consider a mulled cider station or autumn-themed cocktails using ginger, pear or cinnamon, or even hot chocolate all-around after your wedding breakfast!
